At FORTIETH RULE, we are driven by a passion for exceptional wine, backed by the expertise of a new generation of vintners. Our approach blends tradition with innovation, grounded in science and craftsmanship. We push the boundaries of winemaking with a deep understanding of the process, refined through years of research and study.

With three PhDs among us (two in Chemistry) and decades of experience in scientific research, our team brings a unique perspective to the world of winemaking. Collaborating with talented English growers—operating under a French négociant model—allows us to focus on producing wines that are both a true reflection of their terroir and crafted to the highest standards. We believe the results speak for themselves.

Our journey into English wine was a natural progression. Rooted in a family legacy in the drinks trade, we embraced Josh’s vision for a boutique rural winery dedicated to English wine. Josh’s sister Eleanor brought a meticulous, methodical approach to winemaking, complementing Josh’s passion. Together, they crafted two exquisite English Chardonnays for Josh’s wedding—a defining moment that ignited our desire to share these wines with the world.

Winemaking, for us, is a family affair. Bill and Anne, Josh and Eleanor’s parents, bring their expertise to every step of the process, with Anne contributing her extensive knowledge in sustainability. Harry, Eleanor’s fiancé, lends his expertise as our cellar hand, and Ellie, Josh’s wife, is the creative force behind our branding and vision. Together, we’ve created a winery built on passion, precision, and family values.
