WHO WE ARE

At Fortieth Rule, we showcase the best of English wine through expertise and a new generation of vintners.

Our passion for wine is met with a scientific background that pushes for quality through our interrogation of the winemaking process. Between us we have four PhDs (three in Chemistry) and decades of experience in research science. Working with talented English growers (following the French négociant model) allows us to focus on crafting wine steeped in tradition and scientific excellence, both of which are vital to crafting a wine that is a true expression of its place. And we think you’ll appreciate the results.

With family history in the drinks trade, turning our attention to English wine culminated in us taking a leap of faith on Josh’s vision for English wine and a boutique rural winery. Josh’s sister Eleanor brought a methodical precision to the wine-making process. The two siblings proved to be a fine balance, which was ultimately reflected in the two beautiful English Chardonnays they produced for Josh’s wedding. It was something we wanted to share and continue to develop.

Wine making requires a full cast, and in our case it is a family affair. Josh and Eleanor’s parents, Bill and Anne, are heavily involved and in particular we rely on Anne’s sustainability expertise. Harry (Eleanor’s fiancé) is an expert cellar hand and Josh’s wife, Ellie, is behind our artwork and vision.
